When you are subscribed to a forum you get emails every time someone posts to the forum. Forum Subscriptions are set in two places in Moodle.

Your Moodle Forum Preferences
Click on your name in the upper right corner of Moodle. (You are logged in as xxx)
Select Preferences. Then select Forum preferences.
Select your preferred option from the two subscription choices:
Yes: when I post, subscribe me to that forum discussion. You will still have the option to unsubscribe from within each forum.
NoNo: don't automatically subscribe me to forum discussions. You still will have the option to subscribe to each individual forum (see 2 below).

You can often subscribe or unsubscribe to an individual forum. Note that the instructor may "force" or "disable" subscriptions or may leave them at the default (based on your profile preferences as shown above).
On the main course page look for the Activities block on the right, and click on Forums.
Then in the Subscribed column click on the Yes or No to change your subscription setting for each forum.

Forum
Most forums give you the option of subscribing to them. You would do this if you want to be kept up to date on the interactions going on in the forum without having to constantly go into Moodle to do so. If you subscribe to a forum you will be emailed when postings are made to the particular forum to which you are subscribed. Emails are sent to your Bethel email account for each forum to which you are subscribed..
To subscribe to a forum:
Option 1: Check the Discussion subscription checkbox when you first post to the forum.
Option 2: Use the Forum Administration block to subscribe to or unsubscribe from the forum.
