This article describes the process for connecting a FileMaker Pro client to our FileMaker Server.

You can only connect to our FileMaker Server using FileMaker Pro 11. Version 12 will not work. The only department that used FMP 12 is Study Abroad. The only reason they can do that is because their databases are stored on their Dept Q drive, not our server.


Add Server to Favorites

  1. Open FileMaker Pro
  2. From the File menu, choose choose Open Remote...
  3. Under View, make sure sure Favorite Hosts is  is selected
  4. Click the the Add button  button 
  5. For Host's Internet Address, type type bsp-usrsrv-h1.its.bethel.edu
    1. Make sure Show  Show all available files for this host is  is selected then Save Save
      The Favorite Host's Name is optional. Putting something such as the department name is recommended.

  6. If the server name was entered correctly, the box to put in the user's username and password should automatically pop up.

    This password is unique to FileMaker - it does not sync with their Bethel account

    1. click OK

    2. If

    the box does not show up, close FileMaker and run the Altiris task "Fix FileMaker Pro 11 Server Connection Error". After the task completes, relaunch the program and approve any requests to open firewalls. 
    Enter the password and click OK.

  7. A list of available files databases should now appear in the column on the right. Select the one you want and click Open.

Adding the server.pem file

If, after adding the FileMaker Server, no username/password prompt appears, a server.pem file needs to be manually added to the FileMaker installation directory. 

  1. Download the following file: server.pem
  2. Copy it into C:\Program Files (x86)\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro [version]
  3. restart FileMaker Pro and connect to the server again
