Forum Grading Using Rubrics in Moodle

Summary

Using a rubric in an Offline assignment is currently the only way to use rubrics to grade forum discussions. If you wish to use the new rubric feature in Moodle 2 to grade a discussion you will need to add in addition to your forum an “offline assignment”.  You can keep these hidden until grading is completed, but also place the rubric in the syllabus so that the learners know the expectations and can view the rubric prior to completing the forum. Below is a sample discussion rubric. This option requires that you have a window or tab open with the discussion and a window or tab open with the “offline assignment” grading window.

UPDATE NOTE:  Moodle no longer has an offline assignment type.  Instead set up an assignment, for example Forum 1.1 Grade, and uncheck the checkboxes for File submission and Online Text.  Students will see the "assignment" called Forum 1.1 grade and when they click on the link they will be told that there is nothing to submit in this assignment and they will see the rubric or marking guide that you have created for the forum.  You can also explain the purpose of the link in the Assignment description.  Do NOT hide the "assignment" as then students will not have access to the rubric OR to their grade or your grade comments.
