School Conference and Activities Leave

School Conference and Activities Leave

In accordance with Minnesota Statutes 181.9412, Bethel University provides employees with up
to 16 hours of unpaid leave per year to attend school conferences and activities related to their
child.
Who is considered a child?
A “child” includes any biological, adopted, or foster child of the employee who is:

  • Under the age of 18, or

  • Under the age of 20 and still attending secondary school.

Eligible employees may receive up to 16 hours of leave per school year for each qualifying child.

Can an employee choose to use vacation time for school activities leave?
Yes. An employee may choose to use available vacation or personal time instead of taking the
leave unpaid.

What qualifies as a school activity?
Leave may be used to attend:

  • Parent-teacher conferences, or

  • School-related activities that cannot be scheduled outside of work hours.

Is advance notice required?
When possible, employees must provide reasonable advance notice and make a good faith
effort to schedule leave in a way that minimizes disruption to university operations.
