Unpaid Parental Leave (Minnesota Parental Leave Act (MPLA))
In accordance with Minnesota Statute 181.941, Bethel University provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid
parental leave to an employee who is:
A biological or adoptive parent in connection with the birth or adoption of a child; or
A female employee for prenatal care, or incapacity to due pregnancy, childbirth, or related
health condition
Timing of Leave:
The leave must begin within 12 months of the birth or adoption
If the child must remain in the hospital longer than the mother, the leave may begin within 12
months after the child leaves the hospital
Notice Requirements:
Employees must provide reasonable notice of their intent to take leave. When foreseeable, 30 days
advance notice is encouraged.
Leave Coordination:
Employees may choose to use any accrued paid leave, such as vacation or sick time, during their
parental leave.
Where appropriate, unpaid parental leave will run concurrently with:
Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) (effective January 1, 2026), and
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), if applicable.
