Unpaid Parental Leave (Minnesota Parental Leave Act (MPLA))

In accordance with Minnesota Statute 181.941, Bethel University provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid
parental leave to an employee who is:

  1. A biological or adoptive parent in connection with the birth or adoption of a child; or

  2. A female employee for prenatal care, or incapacity to due pregnancy, childbirth, or related
    health condition

Timing of Leave:

  • The leave must begin within 12 months of the birth or adoption

  • If the child must remain in the hospital longer than the mother, the leave may begin within 12
    months after the child leaves the hospital

Notice Requirements:

Employees must provide reasonable notice of their intent to take leave. When foreseeable, 30 days
advance notice is encouraged.

Leave Coordination:

Employees may choose to use any accrued paid leave, such as vacation or sick time, during their
parental leave.

Where appropriate, unpaid parental leave will run concurrently with:

  • Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) (effective January 1, 2026), and

  • The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), if applicable.
