How to Submit to an Assignment in Moodle

Summary

There are three submission options for Moodle assignments: file upload, online text, and Poodll. This article will provide instructions on how to submit for file upload and online text. Poodll is covered in the Poodll for Students article.

Submitting for File Upload

  1. Click on the Moodle assignment.
  2. Click on the blue Add submission button.
  3. There are two methods for uploading a file.
    1. Find the file on your computer and drag it into the Drag and Drop area. This area is designated by the text "You can drag and drop files here to add them."
    2. Alternatively click on the Add... icon in the upper right of the File submissions area. The icon looks like a page with the upper right corner folded over.
      1. Click on Choose File.
      2. Select the file to be uploaded and click Open.
      3. Click on Upload this file.
  4. Click on Save changes to upload the document.

Submitting for Online Text

  1. Click on the Moodle assignment.
  2. Click on the blue Add submission button.
  3. Answer the assignment prompt in the Online text box.
    1. Use any of the tools in the tool bar such as Bold, Italicize, or Link needed.
    2. Pay attention that there may be a word count maximum.
  4. When finished, click on Save changes to submit the assignment.

Is my Assignment Successfully Uploaded?

When you click on the assignment, you should see a green box with Submitted for grading in the Submission status. You can also verify if the assignment document is uploaded or the online text appears correctly in the last row.

How to Edit a Submission

Depending on course policies, revising an assignment may be possible. If the assignment due date has passed, any updates will mark the assignment as late. Editing may be an option, but consult the instructor before doing so.

If the assignment due date has not passed, there may be an option to edit the submission.

  1. Click on the Moodle assignment.
  2. Click on Edit submission.
  3. For file upload, delete the original submission.
    1. Double-click on the file in the File submissions textbox and choose to Delete. (Verify this step specifically with the instructor if Turnitin has already been generated or if the due date has passed.)
    2. Upload the new file.
    3. Click Save changes.
  4. For online text, edit the Online text box and click Save changes.
