Surveying Students

Summary

There are four activity options in Moodle to survey students: Choice, Feedback, Questionnaire, and Survey. This article will go over the primary similarities and differences of the activity options, provide suggestions for what activity to use for specific goals, and give some basic guides to using the activity.

The choice activity only allows for one question. The question prompt will be written in the Description and answers will be listed out in the Options. Limits for each answer can be set which makes it a good option for separating students into groups based on interests. There is not an option for a student to write an answer. Results can be published to students if desired. A grade cannot be assigned to a choice activity.

The feedback activity and questionnaire activity are very similar. They both allow for multiple custom questions with answer options of radio buttons, scales, and text boxes. Both options can be anonymous, have a breakdown of the results, and be able to responses can be exported. The feedback activity cannot be graded, and students will not be able to see the full results. The feedback activity does allow for templates to be created and published for others to use. The questionnaire activity can be assigned a grade (students receive top marks for submitting), and there are options for students to see the full results. A template cannot be created for the questionnaire activity.

The survey activity has five pre-generated lists of questions. The questions are very generic. A grade cannot be assigned to a survey activity, and students cannot see any results.
