Understanding Course Visibility in Moodle

Summary

Course access is maintained out of our campus student records system, Banner.  Typically if an instructor is assigned to a course or if a student is enrolled in a course then they are added to the "participant" list in a Moodle course.  However, faculty determine when a course will be made "visible" for student access to a Moodle course site.

Step-by-step Written Instructions

Students:

  • First check to see that you are enrolled in your courses via the student academic tab in BLink.  If you are enrolled then:

    • If you do not see your course in Moodle, please contact the instructor and ask if they are using Moodle or if they have made the course visible.
    • If your instructor does not see you in the Moodle Participants list for the course, please contact TLT at ed-tech@bethel.eduwith the course ID and section , (course name and number - BIO199 section 1)
  • If you are not enrolled in the course, please contact your advisor or the Registrar's Office.
  • If you would like a course to NOT show up in your course list, please contact the faculty of the course and ask them to "Hide" the course via the course visibility setting.
  • If you can no longer see a completed course in Moodle, this is a result of the Instructor making the course hidden to students.  Please contact the instructor if you have any questions or need access to the course.  Bethel policy is that students should retrieve any resources they need from a Moodle course site prior to the end of the course and should not expect to be able to access a Moodle course site past the end of the course (Some programs require courses to be visible for the duration of the program, but this is not the norm.)

Faculty: Setting Course Visibility

  • Visibility of a course in Moodle is set by the instructor .  Courses that are visible are depicted in your My Courses list by blue text , while hidden courses are depicted by gray text .
To change the visibility, select the Edit settings  link in the Administration block under Course administration.  Once in the ""Edit Course Settings"" page, scroll down to the Visible section and set "Visible" to one of the following settings:

    • Show: select to allow student access to the course.
    • Hide: select to disable student access to the course.  The course will no longer show up in students ""My Courses"" list and will turn ""gray"" in the instructor's ""My Courses"" list in Moodle."

  • Check your BLink Faculty Dashboard: If you do not see a course in your Faculty dashboard in BLink, then you will need to contact your Program Director, Department Chair, or the Registrar's office.
  • If you still do not see your course in Moodle after you see the course in BLink (be sure you look down at the bottom of your course list for new courses or check via the Search courses box at the bottom of your My courses list ), please contact TLT at ed-tech@bethel.edu with the course ID and section , (course name and number - BIO199 section 1)

Faculty: Set Your Course Visibility to "Hide" at the end of the course or term

  • Visibility of a course is the responsibility of the Instructor in collaboration with the Department or Program.  Most faculty make courses hidden at the end of the term or the start of the next term.  Some programs require that courses be left visible throughout the entire program or cohort longevity. Questions about visibility should be addressed to the faculty of the course.

    • To change the visibility, select the Edit settings  link in the Settings block under Course administration.

    • Once in the ""Edit Course Settings"" page and change the "Visible" setting to "Hide".  The course will then no longer show up in students ""My Courses"" list and will turn ""gray"" in the instructor's ""My Courses"" list in Moodle."
  • No labels
