All benefits-eligible employees participate in Bethel's group long term disability benefits plan, which is effective on the first day of the month following the month in which employment begins. Bethel pays the entire cost of the plan as an element in the employee's benefits package. Because Bethel pays for the premium, benefits, if any, may be taxable income.
Benefits under the plan (if approved by the insurance carrier), begin after 180 calendar days of total disability and continue until the participant is no longer disabled or reaches normal retirement age whichever comes first.
Generally, benefits are equal to 60 percent of base monthly salary to a limit of $5,000 per month.
Benefits under the plan may be reduced by other sources of disability and other income including any Social Security, Workers' Compensation, and any disability benefits payable under any retirement or insurance plan. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of Bethel's group policy.
