Details

To create a Google Chat room, click on "Find people, rooms, bots". The "Create Room" option becomes available in the drop down menu. The room then needs to be named. Common naming schemes would be the class title or team name. New members can be added by searching by their name. Chat rooms can host up to 25 members at a time.

The list of Rooms available to you is shown in the left column.

To chat within the room, a new thread needs to be created. Threads are useful for separating conversations within the chat room.
