What is Course Design?

Course design is a cycle that provides instructors with both intentional and tangible steps in creating quality learning environments and experiences for students. This cycle includes considering the following:

  • Plan - What learning objectives do I have for my students? How do these align with my program outcomes?
  • Select - What activities, assessments, and resources will students use? Do these align with the learning outcomes I'm planning for?
  • Build - What will my syllabus and course site look like? Have I considered structural stress?
  • Implement - Finally! I'm prepared for this course and excited to teach it!
  • Evaluate - Reflecting on the course I've just completed, what worked well? What do I want to adjust before teaching it again?
