Changing the number of sections in a Moodle course can help solve a couple problems. The course could have too few or too many sections. When courses are created, it is very likely that there are too few or too many sections.  If there are too few sections, activities could be orphaned. Orphaned activities mean that they exist in the course, but they do not have a section to belong to. Secondly, a Moodle course may appear to have the correct amount of sections, but the weeks are unable to be edited. This results from Moodle not understanding how many sections are in a course, even if there appear to be enough.

Updating the number of sections

To update the number of sections:

  1. Click on Settings in the tab menu across the top of the course
  2. Navigate to the Course Format part of the settings
  3. Change the Number of Sections setting to include the correct amount of sections
    1. This will automatically remove or add sections to be the correct amount. Please note, this may orphan activities if too few sections are selected.

Courses for Fall 2023 were created with a default of 12 sections. This setting has been increased to 16 and will be reflected for Spring 2024 courses.
