Full-Time: A full-time faculty employee is an individual who is appointed to an authorized position and is scheduled to work on a regular basis for a minimum of 17.00 TEUs or 70% of a full load. A full course load is defined as 23.50 – 23.80 TEUs.
Clinical Faculty: Employees in this group are licensed or certified professionals whose primary responsibility involves teaching students in both academic and clinical settings, supervising clinical experiences, and engaging in professionally related service. While they may, they are not required to participate in research or scholarship activities as part of their regular assignment. They will serve on select committees involving curriculum or program related issues. They are eligible for promotion but not tenure. Eligible academic programs for hiring Clinical Faculty are healthcare programs which require the faculty to be licensed practitioners (e.g., Nursing, Physician Assistant, and Social Work).
Associated Faculty (College of Arts & Sciences): An associated faculty appointment in the College of Arts & Sciences is one which is filled primarily by a person whose appointment constitutes at least 70 percent (5/7 on the seven course annual teaching load model) but less than 100 percent of the full position. The appointment includes teaching assignments in both regular semesters and may also include the interim. This is a one-year, nontenure position. Associated faculty are required to carry a proportionate share of all responsibilities assigned to full-time faculty, including advising and committee service. They are eligible for promotion, and eligible for professional development funds on a prorated basis. They qualify for employee insurance benefits (including life, health, and disability), retirement benefits, dependent tuition grant, and employee discounts. Teaching Partner (College of Adult & Professional Studies/Graduate School): A Teaching Partner has a full-time or near-full-time teaching load (more than 21.00 TEUs), but serves in a one-year renewable nontenure position, primarily in CAPS/GS or in a mix of CAS/CAPS/GS courses. Teaching partners are not eligible for promotion or Interim Professional Development Release.
Part-Time or Adjunct: An adjunct faculty employee is an individual who is appointed to an authorized position and is scheduled to teach part-time. See the Maximum Teaching Load Policy for TEU limits for part-time faculty. This handbook is not contractual for adjunct faculty members in the university. For policies and procedures governing these categories, contact the appropriate academic office.
Adjunct Clinical Faculty: Adjunct Clinical faculty are preceptors who mentor students in clinical settings, usually for no compensation. Bethel provides the benefits for those adjunct clinical faculty as detailed in the Adjunct Clinical Faculty section, but no other faculty policies and no other benefits apply to these faculty. Adjunct Clinical Faculty will carry the rank Adjunct Clinical Instructor of (Department/Program)
At their discretion, the Seminary dean may choose to confer the status “faculty associate” on adjunct faculty members who regularly teach three or more courses per year. Faculty associates may receive additional compensation for the courses they teach, and may carry some additional responsibilities by mutual agreement with the dean.
A benefits-eligible employee is either full-time or part-time, but meets the benefits eligibility threshold of .75 FTE for staff or 17.00 Teaching Equivalency Units (TEUs) for faculty.
