Device Registration Portal

Device Registration Portal

The Device Registration Portal is a webpage that allows Bethel faculty, staff, or students to register their smart devices to Bethel's wireless network for connection over Wi-Fi. This is especially helpful for devices such as smart TVs, video game consoles, Amazon Alexa or Fire Sticks, Chromebooks, Chromecasts, Android phones, etc. that are unable to connect to the Bethel or Bethel-Guest wireless networks normally.

To register a device, please follow the step-by-step instructions below. Please email the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@bethel.edu with any questions or issues during the device registration process.

Adding Your Device

If you have connected your device to the Bethel-Guest network without registering it, you will need to wait at least 24 hours for the network to disconnect your device automatically before registering your device. The Bethel-Guest network has a disconnect policy much like hotel or airport Wi-Fi networks where it will automatically disconnect the device from the network after a specific period of time. This Device Registration Portal is a way to bypass this repeated disconnection.

  • Type in your Bethel Community Account username (without the "@bethel.edu" email signature) and password in the appropriate fields and click Sign In.

If you receive a login error after clicking Sign In, please re-attempt to login by opening the Device Registration Portal website in an incognito window of your browser. If the error persists after using an incognito window, please email the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@bethel.edu.

  • After a successful sign-in, the menu page will load for Manage Devices. Click the Add button to add a new device.

  • The Add Device page will load with entry boxes for Device NameDevice ID, and an optional entry for Description.

  • In the text box labeled Device Name, enter a name to identify the device you are adding. Do not use any symbols, such as apostrophe’s, in this field, otherwise you may encounter the error shown in the Common Errors section below for Error Loading Page.

  • In the text box labeled Device ID, type in the wireless MAC address of your device, formatted as 12 characters total, with 6 pairs of letters and/or numbers separated by colon (e.g., 0A:1B:2C:3D:4E:5F).

A device’s wireless MAC address can be located either in print on the outside of your device or in software within your device's network settings menu. If it isn't labeled simply as "MAC address”, it may be labeled as "Wi-Fi address", "Wi-Fi MAC address", "wireless MAC address", or "WLAN MAC address".  The format is always 12 characters total, 6 pairs of letters and numbers separated by colons or hyphens (e.g., 0A:1B:2C:3D:4E:5F or 0A-1B-2C-3D-4E-5F).

  • Optional: In the text box labeled Description, you may enter a description of the device you are adding. This field is not necessary in order to register the device and is optional.

  • Once the device has been registered, it will be located in the list of Managed Devices. You will know that it is ready to connect if you see Pending next to the device.

  • Connect the device to the Wi-Fi network titled Bethel-Guest and confirm if internet connection is now working. If you experience errors that are not covered in the Common Errors section below, please email the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@bethel.edu with screenshots (if applicable) and a description of your issue.

Common Errors

Device ID Already Exists

This error indicates that the MAC address you attempted to register has either:

  1. Already been connected to the Bethel-Guest network. In this instance, you will need to “forget” the network on the device and wait 24-48 hours for it to be removed from the system before registering it within the portal.

  2. Already been registered by another Bethel user. In rare cases, a MAC address may match another device already registered by another user. This would be due to a mistake by the manufacturer, as devices should not share a MAC address. Bethel ITS can assist with finding a workaround if this issue is confirmed.

Error Loading Page

This error most often indicates the use of a character in the Device name or Description fields that is not allowed by the system. To prevent this error, ITS recommends not using any symbols, such as apostrophes, in this field and using only text.

In the example photo above, the apostrophe is causing the error. As another example, titling your device "Josh's Xbox" will not work but "Josh Xbox" or "Joshs Xbox" will accept.

If needed, reload the page or re-enter https://registration.its.bethel.edu in the URL bar. When the Add Device page has loaded again, remove the invalid character and the page should permit you to finish the registration submission for your device.
