Combining Courses in Moodle

Combining Courses in Moodle

Summary

These are the steps to create a meta-course.

Step by Step Instructions

To combine multiple sections that share instructors:

  1. Navigate to one of the sections. Commonly the first or "dominant" section is chosen.
  2. Navigate to the Participants page by clicking on Participants in the course options across the top.
  3. Open the drop down menu in the top left. This option will show Enrolled users by default.
  4. In the drop down menu, select Enrollment methods.
  5. In the Add method menu, select Course meta link.
  6. Search for the other course to be added and select the course.
  7. If desired, choose to add the users being enrolled from another section a specific group via the Add to group menu. This can be useful to distinguish which section a student belongs to.
    1. Groups can be added later by editing the meta link enrollment method.
  8. Select Add method.

If adding multiple sections to one course, all sections can be added at once. However, if adding multiple sections to one course and each section should have it's own group, steps 4-8 will need to be repeated for each section.

It is a good practice to notify the Instructional Technologist after creating a metacourse. The Instructional Technologist can update the course title to reflect all sections now present in the course to avoid any confusion for the students.
