Interim Teaching Load – College of Arts & Sciences

The standard work load for the interim term is considered to be teaching of one course. This general policy is administered in accordance with the following conditions:

  1. To provide adequately for students attending interim and to maintain curricular balance, it is expected that approximately 75% of faculty will teach each interim.
  2. At times, interim teaching is not included in a faculty member’s load because of factors such as lack of specialized classroom space for courses (e.g., labs), curricular constraints (e.g., blocks of courses that must be taken concurrently, or course work that requires an extended period of time to accomplish course objectives (e.g., to observe plant growth). Approval for a load that does not include an interim teaching assignment is made on a year-to-year basis by the Dean of Academic Programs.
  3. In cases approved by the Dean of Academic Programs, special interim assignments are considered in lieu of teaching (e.g., department chair, program director).
  4. Faculty taking a full-year sabbatical are not required to teach during interim. Faculty taking a half-year sabbatical are expected to teach during interim the year of their sabbatical.
  5. Whenever possible, first-year tenure track faculty are not required to teach their first interim.
