Using Rubrics to Grade in Moodle

Summary

Rubrics can currently only be created for the four "Assignment" types in Moodle, Add an activity: Advanced uploading, online text, offline, and single file upload.  Rubrics can be reused in other courses without recreating the rubric.

NOTE: Each criteria MUST have a 0 points level or the rubric will not sum correctly!



Step by Step Tutorial

Create an assignment: Currently you can only use the rubric tool in Moodle with Add an activity > Assignment

In the Assignment settings Grade section set the Grading method to Rubric.  Then click Save and display.

Alternately you can enter the assignment via the assignment link and then in the Settings block select Advanced grading, where you can change the grading method to Rubric and build a new rubric or select a previously built rubric for the assignment.



Create a new rubric or select a previously built rubric:

Click Define new grading form from scratch to create a new rubric.

  • Fill in the Name field for your rubric. The description field is optional.
  • Create your criteria and levels 
  • NOTE: Each criteria MUST have a 0 points level or the rubric will not sum correctly!
  • Click Save rubric and make it ready

Click Create new grading form from a template to select a pre-existing rubric.   

  • You may need to check the "include my own forms" checkbox, leave the search box empty and then click search  to find your rubrics.
  • Then select the appropriate rubric from the list

Grade using your rubric

  • Click on the link to the Assignment
  • Click on "View X submitted assignments
  • Click on Grade
  • Click on a choice for each criterion
  • Enter comments as desired
