SmarterProctoring for Quizzes
SmarterProctoring is a tool implemented into Moodle to prevent cheating and protect academic integrity for quizzes. This tool is paid for by CAS Academic Affairs and requires permission before implementing.Â
The term quiz and exam will be used interchangeably in this article. Moodle promotes the term quiz while SmarterProctoring promotes the term exam.Â
Resources and Support
There is 24/7 support for SmarterProctoring available through the chat feature within the tool. This is a great first step to answer any question that a faculty or student may have.Â
SmarterProctoring also has an online resource page with support articles for faculty and students.
Faculty Setup
The tool needs to be implemented into the course as an external tool. Once the tool has been implemented, exams will need to be added to the online tool. Please note, the quiz must first be created within Moodle; the Moodle URL for the quiz will be copy/pasted into the SmarterProctoring online tool. Any settings for the quiz must also be duplicated in the SmarterProctoring tool. This includes open and close times, password, and user overrides for accommodations.
It is best practice to provide a practice quiz for students so that students can practice the onboarding process and know what to expect.
Adding the SmarterProctoring External Tool
To implement the SmarterProctoring tool into a Moodle course:
- Turn editing on
- Add an External Tool in the top section of the Moodle course
- Enter a title of "SmarterProctoring"
- Choose SmarterProctoring from the drop down list in Preconfigured tool
- Do not change any other settings
- Click Save and display
Adding a Quiz to the SmarterProctoring External Tool
Once the Moodle quiz has been created, the quiz can be added to the SmarterProctoring tool.
A password is required in the Moodle quiz. Accommodations need to be set up in the Moodle quiz prior to adding accommodations in SmarterProctoring.Â
- Click on the quiz from the main course page
- Copy the URL at the top of the page (E.G. https://moodle.bethel.edu/mod/quiz/view.php?id=2171386)
- Write down the password that you generated for the quiz in the Extra Restrictions for Attempts section of the Moodle quiz settings.
- Go back to the main course page and click on the SmarterProctoring tool
- Click on New exam in top right
- Enter an Exam Name. If this will be a practice quiz, enter [Practice] before the quiz name.
- Provide a description.
- Enter a duration. This should match Moodle. Please note that the duration should not equal the length of time from exam open to exam close. Because the student will need to go through onboarding and potentially resolve any issues prior to taking the quiz, we want to give students extra time. A good rule of thumb is to add 30 minutes extra for onboarding.
- Enter a Password. A password is required for SmarterProctoring. SmarterProctoring will auto-inject this password into the password field, so the password should not need to be shared with students. An identical password is required in the Moodle quiz setting "Require password" under Extra restrictions on attempts.
- Paste the Exam URL that was copied from step 1.
- Enter the exam open and exam close time. The scheduling window does not need to be used as we only use the automated proctoring functionality.
- Toggle on any options for Permitted items. This will help the automated proctoring tool deduce if there is cheating. Anything permitted not on the list should be entered into the Notes at the top of the page.
- The next page has Notes for Students. Enter any instructions for the exam here. This may include any tips for specific questions or tips on room setup to not get flagged for cheating.Â
- Toggle on Automated Online Proctoring
- Determine the Lock Down options
- Click Confirm
- If any accommodations need to be added for students, scroll down to Student Overview.Â
- Click on the student requiring accommodations and change whatever setting. Settings in gray cannot be changed. It is not advised to change the password.
Student Experience
The Chrome browser is required to use SmarterProctoring. Chromebooks are not supported.
Quizzes using SmarterProctoring will be accessed through the SmarterProctoring tool. Students will a MyExams dashboard with a list of all exams that have been entered for the course by the instructor.Â
- Find the exam and click on Start Session
- Note what is and isn't allowed during the exam
- Follow the prompts and install the Chrome extension
