Employment of Relatives

Employment of Relatives

Bethel does not prohibit the employment of relatives of faculty or staff. However, to avoid conflicts of interest, Bethel has developed a policy on nepotism. For purposes of this policy, the term "relative" shall apply to the following relationships: spouse, child, parent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, or in-laws. Bethel's policy for all positions, including student workers, requires that a person so related shall not supervise his or her relative nor participate, either formally or informally, in any employment decision such as appointment, retention, promotion, and/or salary with regard to that relative. Written approval for continued employment within the same department or under the supervision of a relative must also be obtained when nepotism occurs as a result of marriage, promotion, or transfer.
